Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association "CMSA" - The Fastest Growing Equine Sport In The Nation

The "Cowboy Way" is Alive

Sometimes when bad luck strikes, it strikes hard, and strike it did to Gary Vickers recently. His main horse, Dragon, a horse that won multiple major events when owned by Rock Clark, suffered a season-ending injury just prior to the 2009 CMSA National Championship. Gary had another horse, a mare that was in training with Kenda Lenseigne. He called to notify Kenda, to let her know that while the horse might need another month or two, he was “afoot,” as they say, and needed to bring the mare on faster than planned. All seemed fi ne, until a freak accident in the stable claimed the life of the mare! Bad luck had gotten WORSE!

That's where the “Cowboy Way” comes in. When Gary's mounted shooting friends found out he was horseless, he got offers of many horses, some the very best in the sport (one being Kenda's horse, Justin). Not wanting to hurt any of his fellow contestants chances by doubling on their horse Gary declined. That's when Andy Carrier called, he had heard of Gary's predicament and offered Elmer, the paint horse that John Clark won the World Championship riding. Not only did Andy offer Elmer, he delivered him too-- hundreds of miles out of his way! Gary was able to compete at the CMSA Nationals, he then went on to win the High Overall at the Mid-West Classic, riding Elmer.

“I'd like to thank all who offered me horses to ride and especially Andy Carrier for allowing me to ride a horse as good as Elmer.” – Gary
