The familiar growl of diesel engines ushered in the 18th Annual CMSA National Championship of Cowboy Mounted Shooting, as contestants and their families arrived at the Paul Battle Arena in Tunica, Mississippi. Over 250 contestants from Washington State to Virginia, from Pennsylvania to Arizona, made this the second largest Nationals in the 18-year history of the event.

The evolution of the sport of Cowboy Mounted Shooting was never more apparent than at this year’s National. The quality of horse flesh and the ability of the shooters could only be described as awesome. Horsemanship, shooting skills and split-second timing were blended to near perfection as participants challenged the demanding courses of fi re. When the sound of sixguns faded and the smoke cleared, competitors became aware that they had participated in another memorable chapter of mounted shooting history.

Each year CMSA contestants from around the world compete in hundreds of Cowboy Mounted Shooting competitions; including WPQ Point Matches, Grand Americans, State Championships, Regional Championships, CMSA Classic Championships and the Western and Eastern United States Championships--all of which create excitement and provide venues where excellence is rewarded to quality horses, horsemanship and shooting skills. Each year all of these events help build a pyramid of competition that leads to the National Championship in April and the World Championship in October. The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association provides a fair and equal competition where the highest quality and standards are met to determine the National and World Champion Cowboy and Cowgirl. It is also very important that National and World Cavalry, Rifle, Pro, Eliminator, Class and Division winners are recognized and rewarded for their significant accomplishments.
